5Want a crane, but haven't got the space/riches for 8421?
By P. Harlow
Having built the more recent 8067, the Lego bug got to me and I wanted to build something a bit more involved. This is an older model and is getting hard to find (look at the price on here!!) but good old eBay came to the rescue...This is one of the last of the "classic" Lego sets, before all the curved pieces came along, so it has a distinctly retro look to it once built. There are lots of clever features in this crane and the building process is very enjoyable - it took me about three hours, I guess. You get a range of functions with this crane: gear-driven turn-table gear-driven outriggers gear-driven winch pneumatic boom lift gear-driven boom-extension front and rear axle steeringThe only real problem is that all the handles are so small, it's quite difficult to use some of them - particularly the ones for the outriggers. Also, the crane is quite light-weight, which means using the handle to rotate the turn-table is awkward, as you tend to move the crane as you turn it. As this crane is quite compact, it doesn't really suit the new Power-Functions motors, as they're just too big to fit without major rebuilding. The pneumatics are a bit of a disappointment, as any sort of load on the boom causes them to sag, but, from a technical point of view, it's an interesting system to build and use.Once you've built this (and tried to wedge Power Function motors into it), model 8053 starts to look very tempting, so be prepared to exercise will-power (or just give in and live with the guilt...)

5Behringer 1202 Mixer
By Les
I am not an expert on mixers, but this appears to be a nice basic little mixer from Behringer. I had originally decided to purchase the Behringer X1622USB Xenyx 16 Input 2/2 Bus Mixer unfortunately Amazon were out of stock at the time, so I went with the Behringer 1202.Although this is a much lower spec mixer, I have to admit that it meets my requirements at present and I have been very pleased with the results and the purchase. The 1202 has 4 mono inputs which have XLR sockets (with 48volts phantom power for condenser mics) and a balanced/unbalanced input. Each of the 4 inputs has a gain control and EQ adjustment with a low cut button. I use a Shure SM58 mic which is notorious for it's low output, but the input gain on the mono inputs has more than enough gain for the Shure mic. The British EQ on the mixer is nice, but note that there is no EQ on the 4 Stereo inputs and there is no variable gain only a pre-set button. Pressing the button increases the gain on the Stereo inputs and this works very well with a good choice of gain, so no need really for variable gain. There is a FX send output so the audio can be sent too an external effects unit and then returned to the mixer then to the output (you could of course go for the 1202FX which has basic on-board effects). Apart from the phantom power button, there are 3 other buttons which are really self explanatory. There is a small 4 segment LED VU meter for level output - don't be put off by it being only 4 segments, this works very well so there isn't a need for a bigger VU meter - just keep it at -0- with the odd peak at -6-. I have checked a recording waveform and the output is nice and level with all output levels adjusted for a -0- reading on the LED's. Finally, there is more than enough audio output to drive any headphones - the output is very loud and clean sounding with no sign of any distortion.I may well upgrade to the Behringer X1622 at a later date, but at the moment the 1202 is doing a good job for me. If you are looking for a basic mixer and you don't want any bells and whistles, then you could do worse than the Behringer 1202.

5Very impressed
By riktor
Not really a big technical boffin so I was gambling a bit when I bought this... Have been greatly surprised and satisfied. It's a great quality desk - works great with my old PA head and speakers.

5no-nonsense, portable mixing desk for travelling musicians
By Mr. T. Povey
I've used this for 30+ gigs with my band (a live electronic/dubstep act), and for hundreds of hours at home. The desk is very simple and sturdy, the compact layout means there are few parts that can be damaged. You can have a maximum of 9 simultaneous channels at once: 4 xlr/big jack inputs with gain pots, eq and 80Hz low cut (useful for mics); 4 mono/stereo jack line ins; plus the phono (rca) 'CD' input if you need it..Outputs are either stereo 1/4 inch jack or phono. With these features and more (phantom power, external fx send..) this is a great product for the price!
