5More than just a drum machine
By Steve
I own an Akai XR20 Beat Production Center (Drum Machine with the ability to add bass or a synth accompaniment)but decided to also buy the MPC500 for its sampling ability, interestingly I had read many 'XR20 vs MPC500' reviews which really didn't rate the XR20, odd as I found it a great little machine, which within a minute of removing from the box it was allowing me to create some very professional beats with bass synth to boot! The MPC is not the same! In fact 'chalk and cheese' come to mind! As soon as you plug it in it auto loads a demo and not much else, the pads are 'hard' to the touch in comparison to the XR20 or most drum machines for that matter, most of the buttons don't make much sense and the whole process of creating songs seems somehow alien compared with the logical approach of the XR20, add to this that the 100 page manual is next to useless when it comes to the basics like assigning sounds and you can see why so many MPC's end up on ebay described as 'almost never used'. But what I will say is persevere! I have learnt a little bit every day, largely through trial and error, but also through sites like mpc-forums where you will meet like minded people who at some point were in the same boat! Learn to assign samples to the pads, learn the basics of sequences and tracks, learn the effects you can add and you wont look back! The MPC500 is a powerhouse and a real challenger to computer based DAWs once you master it, boost the RAM with an after market memory stick (check my review) buy some extra CF cards for storing your work and start working on it, don't expect instant results, this machine is far more than a simple drum machine but the end results are all the better for it!

bit tricky at first to get your head round but after watching a few videos on youtube and reading the instruction manual understanding how sequences and tracks all work also sampling with this mpc 500 is great fun.

5nifty

this machine has some heavy drums. the size of it is sweet, you can take it anywhere like someone else's record collection and sample with ease.takes some time to get used to but once you do there is only your input to limit you. the sound quality is crisp and the selection of kits and beats is amazing for such a portable mpc...
