4Don't bother with the CDJ1000
By Tom_Cat
I use the CDJ1000 in bars and University, suffice to say that although it's a great player, the price difference between it and the CDJ800 (this model) is terrible value for money; particularly when you're on 4.80 and hour. For what is basically a small amount new features, mostly for looping/sampling, it's completely unnecessary to buy the 1000 unless you don't plan on playing songs the way god intended them...The CDJ800 MK2 is an amazing little player that I feel is actually better than the 1000 for a number of reasons. Firstly, the button layout at the top is clearer and more obvious to it's selected functions, which is what you want in a live situation. Secondly, it doesn't produce as much heat and form latency when it gets hot, which is a flaw with the 1000's if they're packed together. Thirdly, it's alot cheaper - although Pioneer have upped the prices by 30% (sadly), the ratio between this and the 1000 still remains. Therefore, the 1000 is now even worser value for money! If you've never used a CDJ before, then you have nothing to fear about. A year back, during my vinyl-addiction days, I raised eyebrows at these things. Yet now I love them, and this Mark 2 model adds to the nature of a Technics and a vinyl, with a new Vinyl-like finish on the platter, and firmer, harder metal buttons not present on the MK1. This MK2 also supports MP3 CD's, though obviously I wouldn't recommend MP'3s on a large PA system. What you may also like is the Platter Response dial, which adjusts how quickly the 'vinyl' starts up after releasing the touch sensitive platter, or touching it. This means if, like me, you're used to rocking the vinyl rather than letting go, you can still flick the platter and get the exact same response as a Technics. In the centre of the platter is a back-lit display, which displays your Cue Points (multiple points you can select at the touch of a button for where you want to start playing) and the position of the song on the platter. This is were we come to only one slight flaw with non-active CDJ's (non-moving platters). Because the centre back-lit screen only represents the movement of the track through a small cut out square, cutting songs isn't very effective, as because the 'square' moves differently to that of the label on your record, timing your cuts with square and the touch on the platter isn't as accurate. I'd therefore say leave vigorous cutting/scratching to your vinyl decks. The only feature I do miss with this model is the Jog Wheel response dial; this player only has the platter response dial. It's not too much of a problem, but the Jog Wheel dial is handy if you want to choose between fine tuning beat-matching on the fly, or brushing it like a moving turn table platter. This deck is pre-set so that it feels just about like a moving platter, once brushed. As a good tip, I recommend just wagging your index finger on the Jog Wheel if your beats slip out.All in all, it's a shame the prices have gone but this is still a fantastic player. You may need to update the firmware, however - my deck wouldn't play CD's consistently, and sometimes I had to play a standard audio CD just to get it to read my own burned CD's first... Luckily, this never happens on the machines out and about. If anyone has had any similar issues, do leave a comment.

5Pioneer cdj 800 mk 1 and 2
By Hugh Nott-bower
More solid and more reliable than all the other cd players on the market today. Great for loops and as another reviewer said you can do most everything with it; the other makes and manufacturers only encourage dj's to mess up the music, and in a club environment it's best not have too many things to go wrong! That is an issue if you are the first to arrive at a club/pub and the last to leave with nothing to eat and all you can drink! This deck the Pioneer cdj 800 is the bees knees. I have seen them outlast other players and never seen one fold in a club, field or beach, where others usually can't handle the heat or humidity these just keep on. The same could be said of the Pioneer 300 mixing desk which in my opinion is the best quality sound and most solid desk ever made for working djs. I will always keep a spare Cdj 800 you can't beat them, and as for the 1000's they seem set to be the manufacturers nightmare; always in the workshop, and difficult to read, too many buttons too many one way streets that can really mess you up and they love to overheat! Wish all electrical goods were as well thought out. Thanks for a classic.

3Outdated now. Buy something modern.
By DJ Raz
O.k so the humble cdj has come of age. Other maufacturers supassed the technology years ago but blinkered pio users refused to listen to advice. Now though ,Pioneer have released onto the dj world two other models- The cdj900 & the cdj2000. Only now will the blinkers be arrogantly shed by previously ignorant pio users. Why is it outdated ? because it only plays cd's. Alright if you have not yet moved into the realm of digital mediaThe cd has now become the middle man and it's time to cut it out of the equasion.Just the release of the two new models leading the way puts the cdj800 & the cdj1000 in the shade ,so why are they still so overpriced?Well the answer to that is simple. Suckers keep spending rediculous amounts of cash on them. Oh ,& pio love your money too !When djs dropped their much cherrished turntables for the cdj800 (which was the best cd substitute) ,it was the answer. Now it's happened again only this time it's the turn of the cdj800...Drop it now before you end up with an unsellable dinosaur.Well now ,here are some other options for your hard earned money. For a djcd player , the Denon dns3500 has always been better in every way & still is.For the next step though you can shed an arm & a leg for the Pio cdj900 or cdj2000 digital media players, the way forward but way way overpriced or.......Denon dns1200 digital media player ,simply the best media player in its price range & in a class of its own. Quality & affordability in one. Or the Denon Dns3700 which is a beast for the money & was the first industry standard deck of its kind......Before pio copied Denon (Yet again)Hey ! I'm only thinking of you guys (In the same boat as me) .Spend you money wisely & don't get stuck in a rut because pioneer will have stockpiles of cdj800s to get rid of & they want you to buy them......Think about it.The cdj 800 & cdj1000 are outdated & have been surpassed with a ...Well...Dawn of a new species.
