Roberts Sound 23
By firecrest5
At last a DAB/CD that's worth buying! I've been waiting for a compact, practical DAB/CD portable for the last couple of years - everything on offer up till now has, frankly, been grotesque. This little machine is everything its 'competitors' isn't: elegant, sweet sounding and very easy to use. If it's not quite Bose it isn't far off and is virtually half the price. For anyone who insists on high sound quality as well as good looks this is the model for you. It was worth waiting for!

Magnificent looks and sound from a compact box
By Ben W
I have been delighted with this purchase. I have been looking for a compact DAB/CD which can offer top quality sound without the need for an external amplifier or speakers. I considered the Bose but was put off by the price. Eventually I was recommended to look at the Roberts and was able to check out the sound quality on a friend's model and I was very impressed. The quality is excellent, even at higher volumes, and I have used it on both a kitchen worktop and recessed into a TV cabinet with equally positive results. For me it is adequate as a main stereo, but I advise you to try one if you are a music enthusiast. The superb looks and reasonable price (compared to the Bose in particular) are just bonuses! The remote is adequate and trendy, if a little flimsy for my preference, but I would like the front lighting to dim a little more when on standby. You certainly wouldn't want it in a bedroom.I have one small gripe for the distributor - why deface the high-gloss front of this device with a heavily glued sticker advertising DAB? A polishing cloth is supplied, but mine now has a slight mark which I have struggled to remove. Either no sticker or an "easy-peel" version please!

Impressive little box!
By Mark Brock
We were looking for something to replace a bulky old hi-fi to listen to radio and CDs. The Roberts does both of those - with DAB, FM and AM radio and the ability to play MP3 and WMA CDs as well as normal CDs, CDRs etc. Plus it will play MP3 and WMA files on SD card or USB stick, and it also has an input for an iPod or similar. It won't record to the card or USB slots, though there are analogue and optical outputs. Plus it has the "Pause Plus" feature.Sound quality is very good - especially considering the size of the box - and the tone generally seems well balanced. It is best sited out in the open (e.g. on top of some furniture) - if you put it in an alcove or a corner, you may end up with too much bass. There is an "equaliser" which gives a choice of preset tone settings - personally I would have preferred separate treble and bass controls. And you will need a good signal as it will highlight any hiss or DAB "burble".The unit is very solid and attractive to look at in the fashionable "Piano Black" finish. There is just one knob providing on/off and volume plus a flap to access the card sockets and the CD slot with eject button. Anything else requires the remote. The blue two-line display is very clear, although there is no EPG feature. All in all, an excellent, compact, fairly priced unit that is enjoyable to listen to and provides enough music options for most people.
