4Not as good as F-Toys series...but...
By Bertie Buggerington
These Furuta models are not quite as good as the other Japanese 'candy'/'gum' type models (named so as usually these ships have a few sweets or a stick of gum inside the box) like the F-Toys or Romando series, but they're rather nice all the same. Besides, Romando are rare to find in Europe, and F-Toys only has its 'Star Trek volume 1' series so far...no sign yet of a second volume...and this one F-Toys set doesn't include Voyager in its line up. Which brings me to this Furuta model of Janeway's Voyager...If you don't go expecting Polar Lights levels of detail, you won't be disappointed. The model is about 4 to 5 inches in length, and all the main details are accounted for, if a little off in scale and dimensions, but for a ship of this size the details are impressive - and I can't see any of the horrors that plagued the recent Hot Wheels series, for example, which with their bent nacelle pylons, soft plastics and the like are the true abominations which drag the good name of Star Trek down. And when you think these Furuta ships are simple toy models that you get with a small pack of candy, for a couple of quid (if lucky enough to live in Japan), and the mostly plastic so called 'deicast' Hot Wheels ships have an RRP of £20, then it really should make the Hot Wheels people feel ashamed of themselves. Also look out for the 'secret' chase models in the Furuta volumes...like Picard's Enterprise E, or the super rare Borg cube/sphere set that lights up the cube in red via a small battery inside, or the rare Defiant from Deep Space Nine (not sure if Defiant is a secret chase model but it is rarer than most and will be reflected in the price you pay). There really are some gems in the Furuta line up, and no one can beat them for the more obscure vessels of the Star Trek universe....they make ships that no one else would think of. For size and value for money, get the Enterprise NCC-1701...and Enterprises A, B, C, D and E....they're the biggest at around 4.5 to 5 inches long. I just got the 'secret' Enterprise E, Picard's Sovereign Class beauty, imported from Hong Kong, and I love it to bits.Oh...and remember to keep the packaging if you get it, to preserve the value. I've seen small ships like this double in value in just a few years. However, many importers will post the Furutas in the inner plastic bags, minus the box, to cut down on shipping...or because they got overstock from the factory which just come in the bags. Don't worry though, you'll at least get your money back if you ever sell them on....and these things are meant to be displayed/played with anyway. Engage!
