Versitile, good value, but software issues
By Dr. Leslie
The product is a very efficient scanner and very good value for the quality of scanning achieved, for negatives of various formats, reversals and transparencies as well as photographs and plain paper. There are three software problems which I have identified during the first sessions of use:firstly, I can't get the scratch and dirt remover to work. I believe it may require a significant additional computer DRAM memory, but I cannot tell if that will cure the issue;secondly, and very annoyingly, if the scan session is stopped and restarted, the new session scan-file names revert to scan0001.jpg etc. The scans seem to be stored under some other filing system so the solutions centre doesn't overwrite the older scans, but any attempt to lift them into an external disc or drive is frustrated unless the user renames them first. It would be better if the scanner sequentially numbered its scans in a continuing sequence ignoring stops and starts.thirdly if the lid is left up accidentally, it seems impossible to clear the error message on rectifying the problem. The only way seems to be to turn the device off and on again at the power input switch. This cannot be the intended solution. It is reminissent of older photocopiers!

Overall a good purchase
By GrandBear
I bought this scanner mainly because I've inherited a lot of large format negatives, and this was the only reasonably priced scanner which would cope with them.To begin with I used the buttons on the scanner, and was frustrated because it didn't seem to recognise multiple images and was generally unfriendly. Then I started to use the HP Solution Center software supplied, which allows you to preview everything and define individual images, crop them, tweak them etc. Not exactly Photoshop standard, but you can do all that later.Speed is reasonable for scanning pictures, but is very slow for negatives, especially if you use the 6 colour scanning and other special facilities. As someone else mentioned, a 110 negative frame would be nice, but it doesn't matter too much as you can lay them on the glass and crop each picture separately. As for quality, I don't think it's that much better than my old Epson scanner which cost about £50, but i'm just delighted to be able to scan all those negatives, even if it does take a while!
