5A GREAT LOOKING AND PRACTICAL OUTDOORS WATCH
By Lawrence Cutler
It's clear that this watch was well thought out - it really looks the part with its dark gunmetal grey PVD case, military style dial and olive green nylon/black leather band. If you're after a quality but not overly expensive watch with a rugged outsdoors look to it, this is well worth considering. The case is, in my opinion, a perfect size - not too big or small. Although it draws on military watch designs from the past, the case's clean, angular lines give it a fresh, modern look. The shade of olive green of the band is very attractive too; a real olive, not just a drab dark green. What I particularly like about the watch/strap combination is how it fits my wrist perfectly, with the buckle centred on the inside of my wrist. I don't have a huge wrist, but I find the buckled half of many watchbands a little too short, leaving the buckle off-centre.The dial is very legible, with simple white on black dial, unfussy white hands and an attractive red second hand. The accuracy is very good and the lumination is fine too.The reverse black on white date window is a nice contrast, and looks good as well as being easy to read.Any criticisms? Well, it would have been good to have a screw-in case back instead of a press-on back. That would have probably lifted it from a pretty modest 50 metres water resistant rating to 100 metres. But unless you're planning to go swimming etc., that's only academic, and it would probably only make it more expensive anway. It's a pity Wenger went for style over function in leaving out 23, 24 and 11 in the smaller inner chapter ring, apparently deciding that the placement and size of "WENGER" was more important. It may seem a small thing but to my mind, anything with a claim to being "military" should always put "go" before "show". But I can understand why many wearers would say "So what!" to that.Although the case does not have a crown guard, the crown itself is quite compact and so not very prone to getting a knock. Adds to the clean, uncluttered look too.The attractive strap is a composite of nylon and leather. The long and short parts of the strap have leather at each of their ends. While the double-thickness nylon looks very tough, I'm not sure how durable the leather would be if worn continually in the great outdoors with rain, sweat etc. I'm sure it's good quality leather but there's only so much even good leather can stand. But for everyday wear, it shouldn't be an issue. Incidentally, getting a genuine replacement band may not be easy. Despite lots of internet searches, I've never been able to find this exact olive/black band for sale. It may be a case of contacting Wenger direct. So, there you have it. I'm very happy with the watch and can confidently recommend it for anyone wanting a modestly priced but quality timepiece with a modern field look to it.
