If your needs match the spec

I was lucky enough to receive a pair of these as a gift (which I had chosen myself). The Steiner Commander has a well recognized, and oft imitated, compact porro prism design with no central focusing. Once the eyepieces have been individually adjusted to the user's eyesight then the user's own eyes perform the focusing - in my experience I can focus from around 10 m to infinity. These binoculars are not useable for close viewing. The Commander XP 7x50 is the top of the line in Steiners 7x50 binoculars and the differences between these and the lesser models are subtle. The XP lens coating offers Steiner's highest light transmission by dint of a broadband anti-reflection coating and is hydrophobic to boot; this does not mean it has rabies - it means moisture beads on the lens surface helping keep them clean. They are reputably waterproof to greater depth than other models as well as having Steiner's reformulated rubber coating which provides a good firm grip. The eyepiece rubber shields can exchanged amongst the supplied options so, for example, if you only use binoculars whilst wearing spectacles you can have an appropriate shield. The eyepieces have memory settings so you can easily move between corrected and one uncorrected vision setting - useful if your contacts aren't yet in. The binoculars also came in a rather smart wooden box with both a marine (floating) and a conventional neck strap and an impregnated lens cloth. The box makes for a very impressive gift, but a molle pouch would be more practical. Whether these differences are worth the several hundred pounds you could pay for them I leave you to decide.7x50 binoculars offer one the brightest views available from any binoculars. The 7x magnification is low enough to be easily handheld whilst being high enough to be useful - it is the standard magnification for portable military and police use. The compass readout, which reads in degrees only, appears at the base of one of binocular views; the binoculars must be held properly in line with the eyes to see it. There is a large push button which illuminates the dial with a red light if required - it is hard to push which means not easily activated accidently. There is also an M22 type reticule which can help you mentally calculate range to object of known size or vice versa. In use these binoculars are superb - a bright, crisp image with no distortion or colour fringes. They weigh enough to keep stable easily whilst handheld whilst not being tiring. They are nitrogen filled and can be used in the cold and the wet without any worry they will fog or their integrity will be compromised. Their performance at dusk is astonishing - in urban settings or under a full moon they make a much better choice than NVGs. They also come with a 30-year warranty which frankly I never expect to have to use. Practical binoculars don't get better than this.
