Delivers on everything it promises
By Ben
I agonised for ages about buying a digital frame. They were pretty expensive, the screens looked small, the quality was questionable, there were pretty well no reviews to be found and the big question was "Do I really need one?".Well, I eventually bought the Philips 9FF2M4/00 and, to cut a long story short, it's just perfect with a few tiny caveats. The "Getting it Out Of The Box" experience was great, it was well-packaged, felt sturdy and well-made and exuded quality. So, I chucked a few sample pics on an SD card (it takes SD and CF cards) and plugged it in and encountered the first issue - the socket for the SD card felt a little flimsy - there was no "click" when inserting it, just a kind of mushy feel - not very satisfying but no big deal, it holds the card securely enough. After a 30 second fiddle with the menu's I got a great slideshow of my pics - the pics are played straight off the sd card, there are a ton of transitions to pick from, you can alter display time, etc etc - pretty well everything you'd expect. The pics looked pretty good but weren't perfect. I have to admit here that I'm a bit of a geek and want things to be perfect, especially when the frame was a present from me to me and my wife and would take pride of place in our sitting room. So, the quest began to make it perfect. Firstly, pictures that were a little dark didn't look particularly good - nothing major, just "not perfect". So, I lightened up all the darkish pictures - looking good so far. In addition, slight imperfections in the pics showed up more in the frame so I tidied up the worst of them - looking better. Then, it became apparent that the aspect ratio of the screen was not "picture size", it was slightly flatter and wider. Unsure as to the exact resolution I checked the Philips web site which states.."Resolution : 800 x 480 pixels (viewing area 680 x 480)"So, what's the difference between Resolution and Viewing area? No idea. I emailed Philips who said.."When a photo with resolution 800x480 ( standard photo resolution ) is presented to the model, the Photoframe will convert the photo to its viewing area 680x480 by software."Ok fair enough. However, I noticed that the frame came with a bunch of Philips sample pics, the resolution of which were 688 by 448 (***EDIT - This originally said 688 by 488, this was a typo - my apologies ***). So, that's the resolution I picked. I went through all the photos I'd chosen for the frame and cropped them (I couldn't just resize them as the aspect ratio was wrong) to that size, resulting in better image quality. So, finally, it was working perfectly and looking great and I would definitely recommend buying it. Ignoring the geekery for now, standard photos still looked pretty good and there's no need to go overboard like I did, I'm in no way implying that the photos will only look good if you spend ages with an image editor. Finally, do you need a digital photo frame? Well, if like you have a ton of lovely photos that you rarely look at then I definitely recommend it. It was so nice to see lots of photos that we hadn't seen for ages so personally I think digital frames are a great idea and I'm very pleased to have bought the Philips and especially the 9" frame - a little bit bigger looks a heck of a lot better.

Memories are made of this!
By Paul Madge
I was bought this as a (generous) Christmas present. It is a product of outstanding quality - the construction of the frame is perfect, and, critically, the LCD display is probably the best I have ever seen. The ergonomics are very sound and make the device very user friendly indeed - you can easily programme it to come on and off at peak times with different settings for weekends. Uploading pictures is dead easy too. Overall, a real top drawer product from Philips which is hard to fault and looks great. In summary, usability and sheer quality in one - all other versions of this sort of product that I have seen seem second best in comparison.

Philips 9" Digital Photo Frame
By B. Wells
We bought this digital photo frame as a gift for our daughter-in-law and were very impressed with the quality of the product. So much so that we were very pleased when they bought my wife one in return for her birthday. The build quality is execellent and the display resolution much better than some other frames that I have seen on sale in the UK. There is ample built in storage for holding plenty of your images but I prefer to use an old 16 Mbyte CF card from an old camera to dump my cropped images to. Depending on the compression you give them this will hold approx 200 pics.My only complaint is the abysmal quality of the Philips Photo Manager software - which is the reason I only give a 4 star rating. Unless you are conversant with file management on a PC you may have trouble locating your images as 'My Pictures' needs to be navigated to from c:/Documents and Settings/user/My Documents/.......etc. Also the drag and drop can be a bit iffy at times. I have also found when adding additional images to an album they sometimes show as an empty place holder with an X in the middle or I end up with duplicate images!!! I now don't use the Photo Manager software but prefer to drag and drop resized images with windows explorer straight to my CF card.Having said all that I am very happy with the hardware and would recommend this frame as it produces a great slide show and is very versatile in its timing, transition effects and auto turn on/off feature.
