I didn't realise how something so simple could completely change the way in which I watch movies and listen to music!To start out, I Recently purchased a 40" Flatscreen TV which in itself was great, but when watching DVD's through my old DVD player they looked bad, blocky and fuzzy, I just couldn't watch them. At the same time I wasn't interested in purchasing an upscaling DVD player as I felt this was somewhat a false economy, and lets face it before long Blu-Ray players will be ten a penny!I opted for an EVA8000 instead, I thought at least this would play HD content and do justice to the TV I had purchased.According to the product brief and tech specs, other than playing all manner of media files I could also sync up and stream directly from my NAS box stored away upstairs, best of all once the unit had been setup I could apparently do all this WITHOUT having my PC switched on!Truthfully I thought all this was too good to be true, and on taking the unit out of the box and doing it's first setup my heart sunk!I had connected wirelessly and found it was slow to do anything, it took ages to scan my Media Shares, and most annoyingly because I turned everything off before I went to bed I would then have to re-scan everthing again the following day!I did some more investigation and discovered there was a firmware upgrade on Netgears website, which I downloaded and installed, I also picked up some poweline adaptors which you just plug in to the wall, thus doing away with wireless and turning my house wiring into a network, these honestly do exactly what they say on the tin, it couldn't have been simpler!What a transformation!These two simple things gave the unit a completely new lease of life. The GUI was better much more refined, I could switch everything off at night and not worry about having to rescan for media every day.The media searches are much quicker once the intial scan has been completed, a quick scan for new files as and when they are added is fast.This unit does a great job of up-converting video media content, I decided to rip a few choice DVD's on to my NAS box and see how they played, i'm very happy to say they worked perfectly and looked great being upconverted by the EVA8000, the resolution was spot on, well as best as a standard DVD could look on a Hi Def screen anyway!It handles HD content well, streaming AVI, MP4, MPG, MKV, WMV with no problems or stutters, I have quite a collection of HD movies now!I won't touch upon Youtube, internet radio, photos or music streaming, these are all simple and straightforward as you would expect.All I can say is most importantly:- DO THE UPDATES, GET THE POWELINE ADAPTORS!My EVA8000 gets used every single day, at last I have something that does my HD screen justice!
