Outstanding performance (but with a few reservations)
By OEJ
I've had this camera for a couple of months now and still I have yet to learn all the tricks it has in its locker. But I have done the most basic of all duties and I think I can pass on at least some judgement. Please note that I do not as yet have a HD television.I upgraded from what was already a pretty decent top-of-the-range Canon video camera, albeit some years old now. The DX1 is clearly better and the most obvious reason for this is the format change from DV tape to DVD or SD. I have used at least a dozen DVD-R discs and have had no problems at all, but one of the irritations has been the slow speed of the camera from being switched off to being ready to film. Sometimes you want to move fast, and if you're in a real hurry, the DX1 could have you cursing out loud. Same applies, oddly enough, when you want to switch off; as there is no removable lens cap (it's an electronic shutter instead) you have to wait for it to close after you have switched the camera off. This can take nearly half a minute, and again this is a nuisance if you are in a hurry. I don't like returning the camera to its carrying bag unless or until the Zeiss lens is protected, so it can be an inconvenience to have to wait. On the positive side the battery is, in my opinion, quite remarkable in terms of longevity. I can't quote an actual time-span that it can be used for on a single charge but it really is quite astonishingly good in this respect. It is though a nuisance to have to remove the battery in order to 'finish' a DVD disc, as this operation cannot be done using the battery. Overall the camera is easy and relatively light (given its high spec) and one of my favourite aspects is the ability to just take a DVD out of the camera and put it straight into a domestic DVD player at home, which was one of the main reasons I opted for this model. It's also convenient for making a recording and simply giving the completed disc to somebody else without having to go through the time-consuming process of copying it onto another format later. The Carl Zeiss lens (made in Germany) is first class, always the first priority for me in choosing any kind of camera, and why I chose the Panasonic brand in the first place.

Panasonic HDC-DX1
By G. Stephenson
as a former super 8 ,jvc digital owner and other tape camcorders over the years the picture quality of Panny hdc-dx1 is superb, great colours ,image (as expected)sharp ,fairly straight forward to use only problem tiny buttons on controls.Takes a while to come to the "ready to shoot"when switched on so be patient.....is slightly heavy to hold when shooting(like a brick!!)great for playback either putting disc in dvd player or as I tend to do plug a hdmi cable from camcorder connection into hdmi connecter on hd tv....everyone who sees the results comment about the picture and sound quality..very impressive!!
