5Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 macro lens
By R. Franklin
I bought this a few months ago to replace my standard Nikon 18-55mm VR 'kit' lens. First used it on a Nikon D80, now a D200.Plus points:Very sharp and crisp, fast + bright (large 2.8 aperture), solidly built, internal focusing, lens hoodMinus points:Unstabilised (no VR), plastic body, not a 'true' macro lens (1:3 not 1:1), 72m filter thread (expensive to buy filters for this diameter). To sum up, this is an excellent lens for the money. It isn't cheap cheap, but then it is a fixed 2.8 aperture zoom lens which is a might more sophisticated than a f3.5-5.6 kit lens. The only big negatives are that it is of plastic construction and has no image stabilisation, but then this is what differentiates it from the considerably more expensive Nikon 17-55mm VR. Considering the £600 price difference, this lens represents fantastic value for money. Image stabilisation is really only an issue in low-light at this focal range, so you may need to increase the aperture or increase the ISO to compensate. If you are after a high-quality 'standard' zoom lens to replace your kit lens, i thoroughly recommend this one.

5An excellent cheaper and small alternative to the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8
By Dr. M. Rhodes
For a medium quality consumer lens, the Sigma offers outstanding optical performance, and respectable build quality. I have owned and/or tested four samples of this lens, and although none was a bad lens, they did vary in optical quality, as Sigma's quanlity control is sometimes insufficiently rigorous. This Sigma is not quite as sharp as the Nikon 17-55mm and lacks an internal motor for fast focussing. Even so, I prefer it in real life because it is relatively small and performs as well as the Nikon when closed down by one stop. It is a sharp, contrasy lens that is highly suitable for use with sensors of 10 mpix and above. My test notes on this lens read as follows: None of the four copied I tested of this Sigma lens was sharp enough to be useable below f3.5, but at this aperture they were very sharp in the centre, making the lens suitable for low light portraits, with blurred backgrounds. From 18 to 35mm, the Sigma has better centre sharpness than the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 all focal lengths and apertures below f8. The Sigma also has much better foreground sharpness throughout the range. The Nikon has better edge to edge sharpness, but has poor corners from 18-24mm. The Sigma corners are generally soft until f5.6. The Sigma also produces a little more vignetting than the Nikon, but this is easily corrected. If the Nikon is the better lens from an optical point of view, this is only by a small margin. If you do not need f2.8 and can live with corner softness, then the Sigma is sharper overall except at 35mm. At 35mm, both lenses perform equally well, the Sigma producing sharper foregrounds and the Nikkor sharper backgrounds. The Sigma is very much more convenient to use on account of its smaller size and lighter weight.Compared to the 16-85mm VR, at apertures wider than f6.3 the Sigma has better centre sharpness. The corners however are softer, especially at 28mm, though the difference narrows towards f5.6. The performance of both lenses across the frame is similar by f8. At 24mm, the Sigma is sharper at all apertures, including f8.I highly recommend this lens for use by an advanced amateur who wishes to upgrade from a Nikkor kit lens, but does not wish to buy the 17-55mm, either on grounds of price, or its size and weight.
