4a favourite easel
By ian russell
I've been attending art classes for several years now, at various venues, each using different equipment. This is by far my favourite easel used with a range of media including charcoal, oils, acrylics, and pastels. Not only will it take a wide range of canvas or board sizes, it is adjustable for either standing or seated work without interference with the user's legs, chair or stool. In addition, the work can be tilted forwards as well as back - many easels I've found are fixed at an angle away from the artist. Tilting forwards is a benefit when using dusty media such as pastel or charcoal, the dust falls away from your work. However, it doesn't allow for working near horizontal or flat, but few easels of this size will. Finally, if space is a problem, it can be folded away to the width of its narrowest element - the upright section - and put in a corner, a cupboard, behind the sofa, or under a bed. It's a solid, sturdy easel, and weighs a fair amount so is comparatively stable in use; the downside to this is it's not easily portable. The adjustable elements are secured by large wingnuts which may be a problem for some hands (other easels have spring loaded catchess which are easier to loosen and fix again). At around £100, this is a fair price for a fabulous, solid, working easel (not a ''toy'', Amazon).(Also to note, Winsor & Newton used to do a good existing users' service whereby they'll supply any lost or broken parts. It's worth checking if it still applies. I rescued one from being thrown out at a class I was attending, it was deemed unusable because it was missing one block and bolt. W&N mailed me the missing parts within a fortnight!)

4Solid!
By Nicholas Thomas
I've owned and used one of these easels from W&N for years, it's taken some abuse and is still working well. Very solid, a studio easel - not one for carting around too far as they're heavy. Can take large canvases or panels, in practice up to about 1.5m square.

5Windsor & newton Thames Radial Easel
By W. Sheridan
Well constructed, sturdy easel and excellent value for the money. Extends to accomodate small or really large canvases, and takesup very little space in storage. Would definitely recommend to artists, amateur or professional.
