Excellent phones
By Trismegistus
I bought these as a replacement for my previous pair of headphones (DT531), and stuck with Beyerdynamic because I was very happy with the brand having compared sound quality with more expensive Sony and Sennheiser models at various times. I only wanted to replace as the 'old' pair had been damaged by me accidentally ripping out the cable a few times, and they'd become somewhat fragile despite my repairs. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the superior sound from the DT860s. Combined with my Marantz SR6003 amp they've brought my classical music CD collection back to life, giving a really full sound with excellent treble, mid and bass. Excellent too with my prog rock and jazz CDs, so an all-round success I'd say.Reviewers elsewhere have commented on itchy ears as a result of listening on these phone, which I haven't experienced myself. Another comment has been on the adjustable headband - and I admit I don't have to expand them at all despite having a larger than average head. So maybe if you have a small head this could be an issue. At first I did find the fit quite tight which meant long listening was tiresome, but now they've settled onto my head OK so don't have a problem listening for a couple of hours or more. These definitely work for me!

Audio Heaven
By C. J. Lansdown
I have owned a variety of high end phones in the search for perfection. Failed attempts include +£250 Grados (horribly made & uncomfortable); Sony DJ type +£200 (crushed my skull & horrible loud bass); Senheiser top pro DJ pair (as used on Concorde!) (not bad for closed back but too much bass) to name but a few. These Beyer Dynamics are a breath of fresh air. Very comfortable (no itching unlike so many others) and the sound is so good you forget you are using them. Nice tight bass, great treble and, unlike some others, the midrange is detailed and pleasant. I listen to classical, mostly vocal & choral, pop and jazz and am listening to things neglected for years. My only quibbles are the "leather" case is an excellent copy of a plastic one and the 3 metre cable. I am disabled and hate long leads: they get caught in me electric bed, chair and wheelchair! Please Beyer, put on a metre of flex and supply an extension. Also the picture shown above is not of these phones as my pair have black frame and side inserts, the latter with louvers.

Great sound and quality - YES REALLY!
By A. R. Pirrie
I bought these headphones back in 2009. I have worked in music recording and editing since 1970, LOUD music haha, so maybe my need for TOP frequencies needs a lil TWEAK UP now and again, the bass still rattles my bones fine. These headphones manage both as easy over as it gets. They come nicely packed in a black plastic zip-up case which YOU WILL NEVER USE AGAIN as the headphones never get put away. These are OPEN 'phones, so the sound is INSANELY good, but if you listen LOUD domestically, everybody will be able to sing along. However, as long as you listen to great music, you won't get many complaints :) ... they are heavy-ish BUT my pair get thrown on tables, desks and floors AND stubbornly survive rough use, sometimes rush-bundled in bags with knotted cables and all. If you want light and flimsy, buy cheaper, poorer sound headphones and replace their sorry asses when the frames snap. If this is your price bracket for 'phones, or even a bit more, suck it up and buy these, they are very very good.
