5GJOA Ship Kit
By kane
Just received this kit. Packaged in a sturdy flip top box. This kit is well packaged and contains full fittings in wood, brass, copper and soft metal. Sail sheet material (preprinted) for you to cut out and stitch your own sails. 3 different reels of cord for rigging. The timber quality for the planking is of good quality. Large sheet plan for rigging and deck fixtures and a colour printed booklet with construction instructions. Display base is included for you to build. My kit came with a free inclusion of a starter tool kit comprising and exacto type small (#2) craft knife and 6 different blades in a plastic container. A diamond flat needle file. A sanding block with sandpaper attached. A pair of tweezers and a small pair of round nose pliers. A nice freebie inclusion. For the price Amazon are asking this kit is a good deal. The model is of the vessel that Roald Amundson succesfully made the first voyage through the North west passage in.

5Pros and Cons of a good kit
By Mr. A. Watt
Although I have still to start assembling this kit, based on an an initial examination of the package and experience with other kits I have some comments. The free toolkit included is good as far as it goes, but additional tools are still required to complete the model such as a pin vice with drill bits, small pin hammer, sewing needles and various grades of sandpaper. Other equipment required is wood glue, fabric glue, superglue. To finish the model you can either varnish the kit as it appears in the illustrations or paint it to match the actual ship which still exists.Given the variety of woods that make up the kit, simple varnishing should produce an eye-pleasing finish. The full colour step-by-step guide is good, but having to repeat everything in seven languages means the text for each step is rather brief and reference needs to be made to the plan to fully understand the instructions. The guide refers to each component by its material and location which in most cases is a packet no. Each packet has a card that shows a pictorial of each part it contains along with its no as well as a packet no.The only thing missing from the instructions is an overall schedule of the components that lists the quantity of each item. Although the professional way the whole thing is packaged lessens my concern regarding any missing parts, such a schedule helps to further identify parts contained in the strip wood bundles. This is a relatively small sized kit in the world of wooden ship modelling but will still require many hours to construct. Many of the parts are quite small.Although this is being sold through the Toy section in Amazon, this is clearly not a child's toy given the small parts, sharp tools and dedication required in its assembly.Given the comprehensive package including free tools and how well it is packaged it represents excellent value for money.
