great scope.

okay,first thing to note is it's bigger than you might expect. it's certainly no TOY,as another reviewer suggests. the tripod is sturdy enough to prevent any wobble while your looking at the heavens.strong steel legs too. the E/Q mount seems to work well,although i need to practice polar aligning a little more.it came with two eyepieces (10mm) and (20mm) effectivly giving you a x 100 and a x 50 magnification.ive already looked at jupiter and even had views of its belts and several of its moons,so as i say ,its not a toy ! it's easily set up as the tripod is already assembled,just add the telescope and the mount and its ready.so why 4 stars ? well although its a fantastic scope for the price,its got a few little niggles.the red dot spotter scope which comes attached with the telescope is so far pretty rubbish,as the red dot almosts blinds the view your actually looking at,so end up using it with the light switched off. might be my own doing,but i find it below par. and secondly the instructions and cd's although adequate,ar'nt great.all i all im very happy with this telescope. if i get into astronomy more ,i still think this will serve me well for a few years before needing to upgrade.my advice if your new like myself to astronomy is get a book to accompany this scope. most books now have sections on setting up telescopes.there are some great ones right here on amazon. and secondly ,put a decent spotter scope on your christmas or birthday wish list. clear skies to you...

if you want a superb telescope and not sure of what to get you cant go wrong with this, its not one of those 'kids plastic play things', its a superb piece of kit that i cant wait to use. the instructions are very easy to understand as to how to assemble it, you need no tools and it should only take about 10 mins to complete. the tripod is a full size and very well made and stable platform for the optical tube(telescope)to fix to, it has telescopic legs so its adjustable for different heights of users and uneven ground. it comes with quality 10mm and 20mm eye pieces and allready fitted red dot finder scope complete with battery. balance weights are included which fit on the superb equatorial mount that ensure your telescope is stable on the tripod no matter what angle you are using it,providing you balance it correctly of course,its really quite easy. if you are thinking of buying this for yourself or giving it as a present you will not be dissapointed with the CELESTRON ASTROMASTER 90EQ

Judoka. "foreverspurs" is right, this is NOT a toy telescope.Yes, there are some plastic parts but the main "barrel" of the scope is a lightweight metal, perhaps aluminium, but it's certainly not a low quality build all told.The tripod is very sturdy with adjustable stainless steel legs which are lockable to the desired height.The quality of the two eyepieces is very good, considering the price of the whole bundle.I have had some extremely crisp views of the moon so far and Saturn, even through the 10mm, was a lovely sight to behold.As previously described, the star finder is a bit of a weak point especially regarding the lining up of the red led dots. (Although you can also try to line up without turning the red lights on.)This is a good telescope, it doesn't feel `cheap' to work with. Ok granted, it's not a digital self calibrating thing that magnifies to Hubble standards, but it's good for the money.If you're new to astronomy and are wondering what to buy as a first scope, then this will do the job.You can get some lovely views through this if you're patient and have a clear sky.
