At the center of our Mandarin program is language tutor Sonia Gil, who went to China herself to learn Mandarin. Sonia is there to guide you throughout the program, blending full motion video explanations in English with a series of highly engaging workouts, helping you understand and speak relevant Mandarin. The Fluenz system follows three clear principles: 1) Live Learning - Learning a new language, especially one as unfamiliar as Mandarin, is difficult to do on your own. With Live Learning, we have brought to computer education the essence of the classroom experience: a teacher. All words and phrases are thoroughly explained and you are guided through a structured learning process. 2) Leverage Learning - Modern linguistics tells us that as adults, we need to use the tools of the language we already know and apply them to learning a new language. With Fluenz, you learn first in English and relate basic Mandarin grammar and syntax to that of English, rather than trying to understand Mandarin grammar with Mandarin logic. I always enjoy learning new languages, but had never adventured beyond European ones. I wanted to expand my knowledge and learn something useful at the same time: Mandarin seemed to be the obvious choice.I began to peruse through various language learning solutions and came across Fluenz. The product was developed by alumni from some top unis in the USA, and uses video to teach you words and that you can actually use and sentence structures that you can incorporate new vocabulary into.Simply put, it worked.I was impressed with the ease I had grasping the Asian language. I was capable of ordering, asking for directions, presenting myself and doing countless other useful tasks. Mandarin had always seemed like a daunting language to learn, so I was impressed that a programme could have me speaking and understanding so quickly.I also liked the method. Fluenz uses English which made it stand out from some other language programmes I looked at (you know who you are!). As an adult and native English speaker, I found this aspect incredibly helpful. The onscreen video tutor, Sonia, encouraged me and warded off any boredom that I have experienced in past language learning attempts.The Fluenz programme uses Pinyin or European characters to teach Mandarin. At first turned off by this, I realized that it is an inevitable choice if you want to be communicating quickly. I spoke with their customer support and they recommended a book of Chinese characters, Tuttle, which I am now using as complimentary material to the Fluenz software.In short, a top product.

A great, cost effective, language learning software

I decided to learn Mandarin to be able to undertake some of my PhD research in Cross Cultural Psychology. I chose Fluenz because I wanted a software that would be different from the traditional software I had used before when learning a new foreign language.Fluenz is different from traditional language software in several respects.Firstly, it goes straight to the point. You can be sure you won't be taught unnecessary words or expressions. With Fluenz, for instance, you will learn how to call a taxi, rather than how to describe the different fruits on the table. This is really helpful, especially when you have little time at your disposal. In short, you can be sure that every sentence or word you learn will be useful. That makes Fluenz different from its competitors.Secondly, when you learn a new language with Fluenz, you don't really start from scratch. Fluenz makes it relatively easy to learn the grammar by highlighting the similarities with English. By doing so, you quickly understand all the similarities, and are able to understand the grammar much more efficiently.Finally, Fluenz Mandarin comes with several additional features, such as videos for your mobile phone.Overall, Fluenz is probably the most professional and efficient learning language software I have been able to use. I have tried several different softwares, including some expensive programs at my university, and none of them were as efficient as Fluenz. If you are looking for the quickest way to be fluent in a new foreign language, Fluenz is a cost effective way to do so.
