Beautiful and Charismatic
By Ozone
OK, I bought this for my 40-something self rather than as a toy for a deserving child - but I don't feel guilty because it's as much a collector's item for adult sci-fi fans as a toy for children. And I did have dalek wallpaper when I was six.The dalek arrived through the post in a colourful cardboard box also containing the remote control handset. The handset and packaging both have a delicious retro feel that's quite appropriate to the 1970's subject. It comes supplied with batteries and so a few minutes later it was trundling across my office floor making threats against the Doctor and anyone else who got in the way whilst waving its eye stalk and flashing its ear lights in a suitably menacing manner. The dalek is available in several different colour schemes corresponding to those worn during different Dr Who stories (google the Product Enterprise website for the full range). This rather classy silver and black paint job was worn by the daleks in a 1974 story from the Jon Pertwee era called "Death to the Daleks". The redesigned daleks of new Dr Who series are also available. If you're buying for a younger person who has only seen the new series then it might be best to get one of those rather than this "classic" one.The dalek is very well made indeed. The quality of the mouldings is absolutely first rate, it feels well put together and it captures the character of the original perfectly. It is really quite big, rather bigger than the stated 12" height lead me to expect and is an imposing presence on my desk. This will make it harder to hide from the wife. The exterminator and sink-plunger-of-doom are poseable but not motorised. However, the head and eye stalk are animated and move around as the dalek trundles. The controls are limited to a simple forward/back button for the left and right hand side (like a tank) and it can be steered around quite effectively with a bit of practice. There is no button to make it speak on command or to control the movement of the eye stalk. I would have been prepared to pay a bit more for all these features but then that might take it out of the "toy" price range altogether.Overall, it's a great bit of nostalgic fun, very accurately capturing the feel of the original 1970's dalek and being beautifully made. It might be a bit fragile for a young child and the suggested age range of 8+ on the packaging sounds about right. I have rated the educational value as 5* on the grounds that it will teach children to run like crazy if they ever meet a real one. Great for older children and sci-fi fans of all ages. Thoroughly recommended.

I was "just looking" at Doctor Who products a month after all of son's Christmas had been bought and wrapped. I came across this item and ordered it solely on Ozone's comment. He was right about everything. Even the part about it being educational and why. Seven year old son squirmed as he learned the controls, because it had an uncanny knack of finding HIM and doing what they do best! The detail and quality is shockingly good. I'll admit to having a good laugh at Ozone's expense, because the commands/threats of this enormous dalek can be heard for miles! Okay, I'm exaggerating a bit, but they do mean business and have the same gravel-crunching voice of the "real" ones. After having watched its movements for a few days, it really does appear to have a mind of its own and delivers the right movement and threat with precision. Personally, I think the way it doesn't let you push a button for a specific command/threat delivery makes it even more realistic and intimidating. If The Doctor can't control these things, what makes us think a human can?!?I'm a forty(ish) mother of an Irish/American hybrid. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm seriously considering ordering one for myself, so we can have massive dalek battles! Well, it is less expensive and troublesome than the Bugatti Veyron and boy-toy I've been considering for my mid-life crisis.Would it be rude to use it to scare away my mother-in-law?
