Are the cheaper non-Canon versions good enough ?

Having unsuccessfully tried two of the cheaper non-Canon versions of this product on my Canon 70-200mm lens I was eventually forced to consider purchasing this far more expensive Canon tripod mount.Both of the cheaper versions appeared to hold/support the lens adequately but any attempt to manoeuvre the lens from portrait to landscape settings within the mount itself resulted in the tripod mount scratching the paintwork of the Canon lens. An item which I had already paid a significant amount for. Not wanting to damage my lens I explained my situation to a local camera dealer who had apparently heard about this same problem from other users.Using the genuine Canon mount was an immediate and vast improvement & it was instantly obvious that the tripod mount was specifically designed for the lens (I understand it also fits the Canon 300mm F/4 & 400mm F/5.6 as well).Manoeuvring the lens within the tripod mount was easily done without any damage & the lens also felt far more secure when being moved around from place to place - warnings having also been received that the cheaper versions were not as secure during movement and damage to the lens could possibly ensue if the lens became disconnected from the mount during the process.While I understand that some users will be quite happy with the cheaper non-Canon versions this was sadly not my own personal experience.Like many others I was reluctant and grieved to spend such an amount on the genuine Canon tripod mount in addition to the considerable outlay for the lens itself. With hindsight I feel that the tripod mount should have been provided by Canon together with the lens upon initial purchase.Perhaps it is the view from many that this lens can easily be hand-held that prevents Canon from doing this. However I personally feel that the aid to increased image quality when using a tripod/monopod is ultimately worth both the expense and convenience. This item makes such use possible. THE TIME I BOUGHT THE 70-200 F4L WITH IS FROM AMAZON, I THOUGHT WHY SPEND 1000 POUNDS ON A LENSE, AND THEN MOUNT IT ON A CHEAP TRIPOD MOUNT RING,THIS IS A PROPER PIECE OF CANON KIT, SO DONT GO FOR THE ALTERNATIVE, SPLASH OUT ON THE CANON TRIPOD MOUNT RING A11(W) 5 STAR
