5A True Work Horse
By I. Vincent
I had this phone for over 3 and a half years, but never got around to reviewing it. So for those thinking of buying one second hand, here it is.For the years before Android and iOS (iphone) there was Symbian, a matured version of Psion's Epoc OS. Combined with the solid build, 2 TFT screens, and fast CPU and graphics processors, the E90 was a formidable beast.Of course, its major disadvantage 4 years on, is that it doesn't have a touch screen, and its UI was designed around a non-touch experience. This meant it lacked a little 'fun factor' even if it was a business device.Good points:- 3G/3.5G (despite what some websites say)- Every connection method going, at the time, including bluetooth (and profiles to connect to PCs and headphones), wifi b/g, USB to connect to a computer.- Thousands of S60 applications including office apps, utilities and games.- The best QWERTY keyboard ever (in my opinion). Including 5 rows of alpha numeric keys and another row of dedicated keys made for swift launching of key apps (contacts, messaging, web, calendar etc)- solid build and robust hinge mechanism- works with Ovi Suite and the retired PC Suite.- Maps, including A-GPS mapping. Free turn-by-turn navigation never came to this device, but as of 2010 it only cost something like 2.00 for the year!- still attracts some curious looks.- ARM 11 CPU running at 330MHz which is still very useable.- long battery life. I would often get a week out of it.- micro SD cards can be used; Officially upto 4GB.- auto focus camera (3mp) which could photograph A4 documents clearly and scan barcodes (unlike the now favoured EDoF cameras of newer phones). You could also set the phone to take time interval photographs and stitch them together in another program to make a time lapse recording.- watch YouTube videosNot so Good points (now 2011 is here):- no touchscreen- ability to send faxes was not incorporated- no wifi N (although this isn't really an issue given most home users have 54Mbps connection anyway)- No longer supported by Nokia. Some S60 3rd Edition FP 2 devices are now getting updates for Maps and the browser, but this device is S60 3rd Edition FP1! :-(- no emoticons to liven up those SMS's- frequent out-of-memory messages which could cause the alarm to fail. Not good when it's your alarm clock.- Nokia's browser was sluggish, and still is on newer devices like the E6, which I upgraded to from the E90. The Opera browser kind of compensates for Nokia's efforts! So why 5 stars? Because at the time, it did everything. The memory issue only became more evident to me during the last year I had it.If Microkia ever decide to build a Windows phone with this same form factor (sturdy hinged 6 row keyboard business device), I'd buy into them...discuss :o)

5Essential for business person on the move
By Paul W
I'd be lost without this phone - for me emailing when out the office is essential and this phone is a delight to use.In fact I'm typing this review via the phone. This is my first Nokia communicator so can't compare with the 9500 but it sure beats my earlier Palm and HP palm tops.I bought this early on and it was a bit buggy at first but firmware upgrades in the last 6 months have really improved its reliability and performance.pros:* big screen - very clear and bright* gps and in built mapping program. Very effective. I also use it when hiking and bought View Ranger OS mapping software* 3g is very fast and means communicate from virtually anywhere* quite a lot of software available* good keyboardCons:* size - bit smaller would be nice but then screen and keyboard wouldnt be as good

4nokia E90
By Me Mcconville
Updated version of reliable 9500. Much tougher build, metal casing and hinges. Faster processor, similar intuitive menu options but not as good as the 9500. Get a car charger, very heavy on the battery due to great screen. Keyboard takes getting used to , not as easy to type as 9500. web browsing over wireless networks much faster than 9500. The only real advantage of this phone over the 9500 is increased speed. micro sd cards and the build. Check it out first and get a demo of the wap features on yout network before you buy, you might feeel that if you have managed to keep you're old 9500 or 9300 in good shape its worth waitng ubtil the price fall but its so jaw-droping cool you'll probably buy it.
