Cisco 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN Product Description:
- 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN
Product Description
Protection of your network is a mission critical activity. Linksys builds powerful security into every product to keep your wired and wireless networks safe. Linksys Small Business Series systems have advanced firewall, encryption and authentication features to protect you from network threats - threats that can seriously disrupt or damage your business by stealing your valuable data, slowing down your network and interfering with business-critical applications. Linksys systems ensure maximum application availability enabling you to meet corporate governance and business continuance requirements. The Linksys Small Business Series is the affordable, reliable, high quality networking solution that helps you do business smarter. Secure and easy to install and maintain, it's built to grow with your business. As broadband speeds increase most 10/100 gateways do not have the power to support those higher data rates, and thus become the bottleneck in the network. The RVS4000 10/100/1000 4-Port VPN Router works at Gigabit speeds to meet the demands of today's networks. It features Linksys' proven SPI Firewall with an integrated Intrusion Detection and Prevent System (IDS/IPS). Its built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100/1000 Ethernet switch can connect up four PCs directly, or additional hubs and switches. The QoS features provide consistent voice and video quality throughout your business. In addition, the RVS4000 features a Virtual Private Network (VPN) security engine that creates encrypted IPSec tunnels through the Internet. The IPSec VPN tunnels enable remote users from at home, or on the road to easily, and securely connect to the office network through a typical wired or wireless broadband connection. When used with another RVS4000 or other Linksys VPN router, branch-to-branch connections can be established allowing users in a remote office to connect to the corporate network.

Can't fault it for the money
By Mr A Ircha
This has been in service for a few weeks now and seems to up to the job. It's Cisco branded, which is comforting but under the covers it's a Linux box (and not Cisco IOS) so don't expect to become a whizz on Cisco routers by practising on this.I like the fact that it was easy to set up, getting my network up and running in a few minutes after pre-configuring it. I like the fact it's a Gigabit device for the money, and I particularly appreciate the IPSEC tunnels. What I didn't like is the enclosed VPN software which I found impossible to get working (tantalisingly it established an SA, but wouldn't allow any data traffic over this link). It's almost as though it's not expecting to be NAT'd behind an ADSL modem/router which is surely the main function of this device. In the end I've established a nice VPN with a ZyXel router which is serviceable enough for my needs, though it did take me a couple of days hard work to work out a working configuration set, not just on this router. Be warned, if you set up IPSEC settings and you don't get an SA/link then don't assume the settings are wrong. It's quite common for IPSEC tunnels to take a few minutes to negotiate and stabilise.I also don't like the fact that I couldn't have SSL VPNs - there seems to be a split in the cheap router community here, with Cisco favouring IPSEC, and some others favouring SSL. Both have their place, and in particular if you're helping non-tech users connect from home, SSL is very serviceable. As it is, as I can't get the VPN software to work as I'd like, this may mean a few home visits might be necessary.I don't like the handling of the logs. The small screen in the web interface is hard to read, and I appear to be trapped between logging lots of repetative detail, or not seeing important security violations.I thought the firewall filtering was very basic - but what do I expect for £100 ?In all I quite like it because there wasn't much to it, and if you're thinking of breaking up a network into some more subnets, or if you need a network to network IPSEC VPN, then this is quite cool. I'm already thinking of buying another to split up my network, as it's useful to have similar equipment on the premises because a) there's less to learn and b) you can swap one unit out for another in times of hardware failure.
