4Pricey but a great bit of kit for the outdoor sportsperson.
By J. Yianni
I bought one of these to help me keep track of the exercise I was doing. I wasn't sure which model to go for especially as the price range varies wildly, but in the end decided to go all-out and buy the top-of-the range and even though I thought it may be overkill I just didn't want to miss out on any useful features.I must say that even with hindsight it was the right decision. It's a brilliant bit of kit. When used in conjunction with the chest strap heart monitor you get a very comprehensive log of your exercise routine. It records nearly every aspect of your activity (at the press of a button) including your heart-rate; altitude; outside-temperature and barometric weather measurements. This is then downloadable via the built-in infrared port in the watch to your PC or laptop (provided your PC has an IR port too) and is clearly displayed on the included software's calender and graphical display. You can add any notes you want and mark significant points on your run/activity with comments. It then automatically totals up your weekly calories burned and (if you type it in each time) the total distance you've run, Brilliant!! It can even do a fitness test on you whilst you lie still to assess your fitness. You can use this to monitor your fitness improvements over time. Nice!I can also report that when I managed to damage the strap I called their customer service team who told me to package it up with a covering letter and proof of purchase and they'd have a look. I sent it off recorded delivery on a Wednesday and to my amazement I got it back on the Saturday morning (Royal Mail Special Dly) with a brand new strap. You couldn't ask for more.I realise that this may sound a bit like an advert for them so below are my only qualms about an otherwise brilliant bit of kit :-a.) You won't fully utilise it if you're a techno-phobe.b.) It's not pretty and really is a clunky and bulky thing. It's the "Hummer" of the watch world, which is fine if you're a big strapping fellah but not if you like delicate kit, ladies beware. Although the wrist strap is adjustable, if you've got small wrists this thing will rattle around and bruise your skin unless you wear it over clothes.c.) The only glaring absence in its arsenal is GPS which would mean your exact distance travelled would be effortlessly gathered along with all the rest of the data. In its absence you have to either know how far you've travelled or drive it in a car/bicycle and use their milometer to work-out the distance andmanually type it into the software on the PC if you want really comprehensive exercise data.Despite these three points I must say I'd still highly recommend it if you're serious about outdoor excercise.Hope this has helped!
