Fully loaded compact camera

If you want a compact camera that can be carried in a pocket and yet enjoy many benefits of the pros then this camera is a very good choice.It has 10 megapixels at 28 mm (wide lens ideal for indoor shots with many people) in 16:9 aspect ratio (like flat tvs and many laptops). This can be changed easily to 3:2 (typical photographs) and 4:3.But what it really got me was the range of manual controls: aperture priority, shutter priority, and full manual. So no more relying on the camera to get those difficult pictures at night or against the sun.It also has image stabilization and can produce pictures in RAW format (ie. the full picture information before the compression needed to produce a JPEG file). It has a huge display screen, which my wife loved.CONS:- Beware that at the 3:2 and 4:3 aspect ratios, the maximum pixels are 8.5 MP and 7.5 MP (the side areas are ignored, basically).- My only concern before buying it was the lens cap. I went for it anyway and fortunately discovered that it is not an annoyance at all, it is held by a little strap and I forget it is there.- There is a lot of talk about the level of noise, I have not noticed it but if noise is your concern then you'd probably go for a DSLR.I liked the black one but I bought the silver because I think scratchs are less noticeable.All in all I am very happy camera with this camera.

After coming home from an Italian holiday, I wanted to find out more about the Panasonic Lumix cameras that many of the group, I was with, using. All the models certainly seemed an improvement on my Nikon Coolpix 885 and were almost as good as my Olympus SLR E400. On holiday I was using the still facility of a Canon HV20 ( less stuff to carry about ).Eventually I part exchanged the Nikon for a LX2. And I find it amazingly good. The controls are easy to understand and use and not too many. The menu and joystick seem to be in just the correct position. Having become used to the menus I find the scenic menus just what I need. I like the ability to use Auto, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual. This is the first camera that I have wanted to play with White Balance rather than leave the camera on AutoAll in all a very clever camera in a small, handy package. Well done Panasonic

impressive in theory, not so much in practice

I bought this camera on the basis of its specifications. However, there are major problems with it. I refer here mainly to the automatic setting as i haven't yet investigated all the manual functions [bear this in mind]. Nevertheless, the following are poor:1. NOISE - v.large amount in conditions of anything other than daylight, and although the zoom is comprehensive, it is pretty much useless in this field given the amount of noise that quickly appears when used2. DIMENSIONS - panasonic basically lie about these on their website3. SOFTWARE - really quite pathetic - you'll just end up using photoshop if you already have it4. EASE OF USE - not at all intuitive; especially with the manual functions. Menu is badly set out and confusing5. FOCUSING/ANTI-SHAKE - focusing is slow; anti-shake is effective but at the cost of speed when taking a photo6. WHITE BALANCE - using the presets doesn't seem to make any differenceIn contrast, the good points are the looks, battery life, screen [+ 16:9 setting], ergonomics, flash - but these hardly make up for the more considerable failings above. Ends up being a pretty impractical camera...
