5Stagg M50E Mandolin
By A. L. Howell
This is a beautiful instrument at a fantastic price. The sound quality is great for a beginner but also good enough for a performance also. I note that this Mandolin has been criticised for not holding its tune. This is often the case with new inexpensive strings especially on smaller instruments. It can be solved by tightening the tuning pegs a little and/or replacing the strings with slightly more expensive ones if you're really that fussed. It will still need tuning before you play each time, but is this not true of most string instruments? I bought mine from Normans - their service was incredible - packaged very securily and delivered in 24 hours!Stagg M50E Electro Acoustic Bluegrass Mandolin RedburstStagg M50 E - Electro-acoustic Bluegrass Mandolin w/ Nato top

5Good value but compare prices!
By Kenneth F. Mcara
This instrument seems to be going up in price rather swiftly as outlets run out of stock - I got mine from here recently for [...]. As the previous reviewer notes, it does take a couple of tunings before it begins to hold its tune better, but this is a small price to pay. It seems to be the same item also variously available on Amazon as Rocket by Stagg M50E Electro Acoustic Bluegrass Mandolin Redburst and Stagg M50 E - Electro-acoustic Bluegrass Mandolin w/ Nato top so you may wish to compare prices before deciding which one to buy.It plays well, looks great and fits beautifully into Stagg GCA-M Shaped Mandolin Case in case you want to order both together. I ordered them from RST Music Services, and they delivered them as a single package, with the mandolin already inside the case.If you want to hear great Scottish Mandolin playing, try Highland Mandolin by Dagger Brown. His tutor book is also excellent, but doesn't seem to be stocked by Amazon at present.

4Great Mandolin for the price
By JD
I bought this a few months ago and thought I would give it a while before writing a review. The Stagg has a a great finish and sounds like a Mandolin that would easily set you back two or three times the price. Although I have not gigged this instrument, it probably wouldn't need much amplification, as with most mandolins it is has a good level of volume acoustically. However, the single coil pickup works well when you play it through an amp, although a good selection of controls on your amp will help you in creating the required sound. On the much discussed topic of staying in tune, the first thing I did on receiving the Stagg was to change the strings. Remember to lock each string by bringing the loose end over the capstan towards the centre of the headstock and looping it under the captured string between the nut and the capstan. Now bend the string up and back towards the middle of the neck. While maintaining tension on the string with your right hand, wind the string in a downward spiral onto the capstan. Once the string comes to tension, you can release your right hand. Now perform a tune then stretch action until the string stays in tune after the stretch action. I have found this routine keeps most stringed instruments in tune for longer. However I agree with one of the other reviewers that any stringed instrument should be re-tuned before playing. All in all a great buy that I would recommend to anyone looking to take up the Mandolin.
