Product Description

The Tri-Angle Sharpmaker includes two sets of high alumina ceramic stones: A pair of medium-grit (brown) stones for aggressive sharpening and a set of fine (white) stones for professional grade finishing. The stones are triangular for sharpening Plainedges on the flat sides and SpyderEdges (serrations) on the corners. Included is a set of brass safety rods protecting the users hands while sharpening. All components snap into the self-contained ABS plastic base and lid -- ready to travel with you. Die-cut into the base are keyed slots and holes fitted for the stones. They accurately set the stone's sharpening angle at a 30° (15° each side) or 40° (20° each side) for knives and a 12.5° scissor setting. Turn the base over, a channel lets you lay two stones side-by-side (flat-side up) for use as a benchstone. The lid snaps halfway over the base creating a handhold for stability while you're sharpening. Included is a set of brass safety rods to protect the users hands while sharpening. Ceramic stones, like glass, will break if dropped -- handle carefully. Use them dry, without oil, water or lubricants. To clean: scrub stones with a plastic scouring pad and powered abrasive cleaner, let air-dry.

5Versatile, elegant & effective; my knives have never been as sharp
By HLT
There are at least three approaches to knife-sharpening: traditional whetstones, which take some skill, not least in maintaining the correct angle; fixed V-rod devices like the Gerber Pocket Sharpener which is a good device for what it does (and costs), but which won't put a razor edge on a blade and won't bring back an abused/neglected blade; and finally devices like the Spyderco which is essentially a set of whetstones in a package that makes it easy to use.All the parts are stored in a sturdy plastic box, which doubles as a base into which two (of four provided) specially-formed sharpening stones are slotted. Depending on which slots you choose, it presents an angle of either 30, 40, or 12.5 degrees, the latter being for scissors which this device sharpens remarkably well. The usual angle for knife-sharpening is 40; 30 is provided in case you need a finer (but less resilient) edge, or if you're dealing with an older blade that's been sharpened away back from its original edge, meaning you're working with a relatively thick piece of steel. Then you can use the 30 setting to remove some of that extra steel, before finishing the job on the 40 setting. Two brass safety-rods slot in securely next to the sharpening stones, shielding the hand that holds the sharpener in case you slip. The DVD has a kind of "Shopping Channel" feel to it, but it's well worth watching because of all the hints and tips it contains. Here you will find out how to sharpen just about anything you can imagine, from fish hooks to potato peelers to chisels (with peelers the trick is to remove the burr from the upper/inner part of the blade, something I never realised before, and which has enabled me to revitalise a couple of annoyingly "faulty" peelers that previously languished, brand new and unused, in the back of the kitchen drawer). The whole thing is cunningly designed so that it does different jobs depending on how you configure and use it. The sharpening stones, being triangular, will remove metal more aggressively if you work with the corner; less so if you work with the flat. There are two grades of stone; grey (coarser) and white (finer). You only need to proceed to the white stones if you want a razor edge. Each stone has a groove in one of its three faces, for sharpening pointed tools like bradawls etc. As well as presenting various angles, the base can also carry two stones flat and side-by-side, giving you a traditional flat whetstone.Bottom line: I've gone from never being really satisfied with the sharpness of my blades, to having kitchen and pocket knives that are a joy to use. This device works.

5Best edge ever
By Cooing Woodpigeon
The Syderco Tri-Sharpener is an amazing little device. The sharpener comes with a DVD instruction guide that is painfully naff but worthwhile watching; it teaches you how to use the Spydeco to sharpen all manner of objects. In different configurations, it's able to deliver outstandingly sharp edges to knives, scissors, fishing hooks, darts, axes...The edges it produces are so sharp yet critically smooth too, they glide through pretty much everything ...including fingers (be warned, one needs to be especially careful with knives sharpened with the Spyderco - everyone in my house including myself, have been caught out by how deceptively sharp the edges this gizmo leaves)! The Spyderco can quickly produce an edge sharp enough to shave hairs off you arm!My one criticism is I'm finding the very tiny tip of my knives chip off during sharpening. You'd really have to look hard to see this, but because of the action involved in sharpening flicks the point of the blade off the rods, it's wearing the very tiniest tip off the blade also. This isn't a big concern to me because there's still a very sharp point, but for a device that treats the knives blade so well, this is the only flaw in its design. Besides, it probably just requires me to adapt my technique a little.I've used many types of sharpeners over the years, all with similar results -there was a lot of skill involved to get a sharp edge, and even then, those edges were pretty rough and would often catch and rip newspaper. I took a chance the Sypderco, having read lots of reviews for it. At £60, it's not cheap, but if you really want a knife, any knife, to be as sharp as a scalpel, then this is the device to get. It's in a different league to anything I've ever used before. It's great!

4Does what it says on the box
By Mr. Wayne Pascoe
This is a great solution to keeping knives sharp. I use the Lansky Standard Sharpening System for annual maintenance but it's tedious to setup and takes a while to use. Its limitations are especially clear on larger blades. The sharpmaker sets up on the kitchen counter quickly, and really works exceptionally well for keeping blades in good condition.I'm not sure I'd want to use it to fix a really damaged blade, but for keeping well maintained blades at their absolute best, this is brilliant.
