Great boat, crane is clever but not strong enough

We bought this for my 5 year old son for Christmas 2008. There's lots of lego in the box and I spent most of Christmas afternoon building it. What's good? The boat is good fun, some nice detail in the bridge and the engine room. It floats well, though it is too long to turn around in the bath (not that it really matters). We've had fun putting different things in the cargo boxes too and transporting them on the high seas.What's not so good? The crane has a nice mechanism with a few simple gears to raise and lower the hook, but the crane is weak and comes apart if it reaches over too far or tries to lift anything too heavy. Being lego its fairly easy to fix, but I'd prefer if it didn't fail so easily.

Lego at it's best

Any little boy would love this. It is quite time consuming to build but great to play with once it is. My son is 6 now and is able to do a lot of the building himself, which is great, but when we first got it he was only 4.5 and I had to do all the building. therefore I would not recommend this product for a child younger than 6 unless you have a lot of free time to build it up. Otherwise it's like all lego....a fantastic toy!

The boat is massive and yes it does float as we've tried it out in the bath. At the pricey end of the Lego range but worth it.
