5Good Bench for Home Gym
By S. Ainley
Having owned & used this bench regularly for nearly two years I can confirm that it is a very good quality product, & a good choice for a home gym. It is large, heavy, very stable, robustly built, & easily handles far in excess of the loads that most home weight trainers will place on it.Regarding some of the negative reviews, although the barbell support posts are fairly close together, they are farther apart than many home benches, and the dimensions work well with a traditional exercise bar (ie 5 foot long, 1 inch diameter). When using a bar of this type (as the vast majority of home trainees are likely to be doing) the posts sit towards the outside edges of the knurling, ie alongside the user's hands. Clearly everyone's ergonomics will be different but for myself at 5'11'' the posts are close to the hands but not sufficiently so as to be a problem. Incidentally, if the position of the posts were widened, little clearance, if any, would be left between the posts & the weight plates positioned on the barbell. This could cause difficulty if replacing the barbell at the end of a heavy set required very precise co-ordination.It's also worth noting that for the home user the 540 has the significant benefit of versatility. The seat incline is adjustable and the bench can be folded to save space. The tall posts allow squats to be performed, & it can be paired with a lat pulldown attachment (although not folded at the same time) providing a platform on which the whole body to be trained effectively. If the user wants a bench with very widely positioned support posts I would recommend they buy an Olympic bench (& the Olympic bar & weight plates to go with it). However, if they are specifically interested in this type of product they are likely to either have a particular interest in performing a very heavy bench press, or to have progressed well beyond the level of most home weight trainers & are likely to own a separate squat rack or similar. Finally, I would recommend this bench to anyone looking for a qood quality, heavy duty bench on which to perform a wide range of exercises in a home gym environment. Understand what it is & how it does it. Decide what you actually require from a bench, & select the product that will suit you best.

4Does the job, but!
By R. S. Greenwood
HiI bought this weight bench 6 weeks ago, and I love having in there. It is really well built and sturdy. The only down side is if you are tall, your feet will drag on the leg exersizes, so if you are 5 10 or more, go and try one in a shop first! . Also for these leg exercizes , if you use the vinyl weights, you wont be able to fit enough weight on!

3Sturdy, does the job but albeit less than perfectly
By Thanaton23
This bench is vastly superior to many home benches in that it is VERY sturdy, solidly build and durable. The stands are protected by a galvanised plate which adds to the solid looks of the product. The adjustability of the backrest is great, particularly since most benches will only go flat or incline and not decline, but this does. The leg attachment is the usual fair but is certainly useable. The big plus for me is that it can be folded away, which saves a lot of space at home. Also, it is light enough to easily maneuver against a wall when not in use.The other plus is the squat rack. I already have a proper squat rack, but this is kept outside and is not fun in the snow, ice and rain! The rack facility of this bench provides a useable backup to I don't miss out on squats through the winter.OK, thats the good bits.........Here's the problem with the bench........Well........it's me that's the problem really, i'm 6" 2' and this bench is NOT made for us lanky freaks! For someone who is about 5" 6', it's ideal, but for me, the backrest is not long enough. If I incline the backrest and sit properly with my butt on the seat pad and back against the backrest, my arms are just about in line with the stands! Oh dear! So yes, I have to shimmy down which results in a curved lower back - not good! Similar problems exist in the decline position, but obviously, on the flat it's not an issue. Also, due to my height, when using the rack for squats, the bar is set much lower than I would usually like. For some idea of how low this is, the bar is held exactly in line with the bottom of my sternum, which means lifting the bar off the pegs in a "half squat" position. As mentioned previously by other reviewers, the distance between the stands is certainly an issue as the pegs are right where your hands want to be. I found a solution to this problem placing the bar to the left (or right) and lifting the bar off the stands with both hands to the left (or right) of the stands. In this way, the bar can be held in the correct position and obviously, is replaced in a similar manner.Despite the problems with the bench, I can live with them by being inventive and will continue to use it. If you're around 6", steer clear. BUT, if you're around 5" 6', it's an EXCELLENT bench and will certainly suit your needs up to an advanced level!
